“Response to Intervention” Workshop

Local 943 held a RtI workshop on September 29, 2009 since many districts are implementing a Response to Intervention approach to address the needs of students who are struggling to achieve in school. RTI is essentially a general education initiative which requires collaborative efforts from all district staff. However, in Illinois, many districts are implementing RTI as a result of the changes in the Part 226 state special education rules. This workshop provided an overview of RTI and the potential role of union leaders in the development and implementation of RTI in Illinois schools.

Sue Walter, IFT Union Professional Development Director, presented the workshop.

The workshop covered the following topics:

  • What is Response to Intervention (RTI)?
  • Why are districts moving towards the use of RTI processes?
  • National and State Perspectives
  • Overview of RTI Implementation Issues
  • RTI: Implications for the Union
  • Resources for RTI

Attendees at the workshop have a discussion about what they are learning from Sue Walter, IFT Union Professional Development Director (pictured lower right)
