Together we are greater than one!By Linda Wagner, first time convention delegate; teacher, Ridgeland School District #122
When I first signed up to be a delegate for the 2008 AFT Convention, I had no idea that this convention would change the way that I would view the union that I belong to. Upon arrival, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of people that were there to represent their respective locals. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to our union leaders, learning that we are “Greater Than One,” and understanding how our union works. The fact that Mayor Daley, and Senators Dick Durbin, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama all spoke to us at this convention shows the importance that is placed on the AFT and its members. One of the highlights of this convention happened while we were waiting to get into the general assembly to hear Hillary speak. Ed McElroy, the retiring AFT president, walked past while on his way into the general assembly. I hurried over to shake his hand and will never forget the interest he took in me. I told him that it was my very first convention, and what did he do? He took the time to ask my name, took a picture with me, and shook my hand. He said that he was glad to meet me. Needless to say, I was extremely impressed! The mission of the American Federation of Teachers is to improve the lives of its members and their families, to give a voice to our aspirations, and to bring together all members to assist and support each other. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to share in this mission and to realize that I am “Greater Than One!” |
