Members recognized for 30 years of service
The AFT selected two of Local 943’s members, Jan Rice and Nancy Tauchman, for the “Living the Legacy Award”. This award is given in recognition of the accomplishments and contributions of women members who have been reformers, risk takers and role models. Without the contribution of these people along with past honorees, the teacher union movement in the southwest suburbs would be greatly diminished. Both Jan and Nancy received the “Silver Recognition award for Thirty Years of Service” at the AFT Convention. Jan Rice was a charter member of Local 2445—the Southwest Suburban Cooperative for Special Education—which later became a council of Local 943. Jan retired after 35 years from the Coop. As an early union activist, Jan traveled to Washington, D.C. for Solidarity Day in September, 1981. She served as council treasurer for over 20 years and also served on the negotiating team, and special education and women’s rights committees. Her advice to new teachers is to get involved in the union because “it will enhance your career.” Jan also volunteered at Oak Forest Community Hospital and was a religious education teacher for special education students. Nancy Tauchman has retired from Oak Lawn-Hometown District 123 after 34 years of teaching. She had been active in the union for thirty of those years. During that time she has served on the negotiating team, building rep, secretary, treasurer and, most recently, president. For the last two contracts, Nancy has been the chief negotiator. In addition, Nancy has been a mentor to teachers before the idea became popular and has run the fundraiser at her school for many years. Her advice to new teachers: “If you can’t have fun while teaching, it’s not the career for you!” Congratulations to Jan and Nancy. Local 943 wish you both a happy and healthy retirement!
