Warning! Proceed with Caution Under New Diabetes Law
The Care of Students with Diabetes Act took effect on January 1.
IFT members should be aware that the new law could have serious consequences for the safety of both diabetic students and the school employees who volunteer to care for them.
The law entitles teachers and other school staff to elect to become "Delegated Care Aides" and to provide medical assistance - including administering insulin injections - to diabetic students, with minimal training and without medical licensure.
The IFT believes strongly that it is in the best interests of both diabetic school children and school staff that any member considering volunteering to be an Aide strongly consider the possible consequences of doing so.
