Pension proposal would cut members' pay by 2 percent

The legislature is considering a proposal that would force members to pay 2 percent more for their current pension benefits. Under the proposal, members’ payments would increase, but the state would pay less. This idea should be rejected by lawmakers! The proposal also includes a reduction in benefits for future employees to create a two-tier system. Such a reduction won’t solve Illinois’ pension problems and is just wrong. As teachers, university professionals and public employees, we have never missed our pension payments. Tell legislators to preserve our pension benefits and pay down the debt that they have created. Our pensions are our retirement safety net and must be protected. Here’s what you can do:

  • Call your legislators. Dial the main General Assembly phone number (217/782-2000) and ask to be connected to your representative and senator. Then deliver the message.
  • Send an e-mail. Go to the IFT website at www.ift-aft.org and click on the “No More Pension Cuts” icon to participate in the IFT's online letter-writing campaign.
  • E-mail your colleagues. Forward this email to everyone you know who will receive a state pension.
  • Stay informed. Check the IFT website for action alerts and updates.

Email your legislators today to urge them to oppose changes to public pension systems.
