Workshop demonstrated PSRP’s role in home/school connection

I recently attended a workshop given by the Union for paraprofessional support staff. The workshop topic was “School-Home Connection: Partnerships Supporting Student Learning.” The workshop was presented by Sue Walter, a former special education teacher who now works for the Illinois Federation of Teachers.
Prior to the main topic presentation, we were given a copy of the Illinois Administrative Code concerning discipline in our schools. Our discussion was on the requirements for the use of physical restraint in the school setting. Sue stressed for us the physical restraint issues and the need for the school district to provide us a written procedure plan to be followed by staff in cases of restraint. We were reminded that the district should also provide training in this area for all paraprofessional support staff. The district must follow the Illinois code at all times.
The main topic of discussion for this workshop was addressed next. This interactive class demonstrated the school and home connection and the role that paraprofessionals play in this dynamic. We were given research on the subject and then shared ideas and information and learned from each other.
We joined in an activity called “The Juggler”. This activity addressed all the issues and responsibilities that a child “juggles” in his day-to-day life that can impact school performance. We discussed the problems many of our students face today, from lack of parental supervision and emotional support, to divorce and single parent issues.
We then brainstormed specific supports that paraprofessionals can provide to help our students address these problems. It was decided that paraprofessionals have the most direct one-on-one contact with our students daily. We may provide the most support, interest and encouragement the student will receive. Our goal is to help each student overcome adversity in his personal life and achieve success.
Overall, we learned the value of parapro-fessionals in the home-school connection. Paraprofessionals provide emotional support, motivation, and structure in the student learning process. We can and must impact our students’ lives in a positive way to encourage success for all. |
