ER&D -- Educational Research and Dissemination

Local 943 is pleased to present to its members a research-based professional development program created by the American Federation of Teachers known as ER&D. These quality staff development courses are available to all teachers and paraprofessionals. The goal is to encourage educators to improve their practice and student achievement by using research based techniques and strategies.

AFT LOCAL 943’s

Spring 2010 Educational Research and Dissemination Courses

Registration is open for the following courses:

  • Think Math I - Patterns
    (all grade levels)

Class cancelled

  • Thinking Math - Algebra
    (most applicable to grades 3 -12)

Class cancelled

  • Managing Students with Anti-Social Behaviors
    (all grade levels)

Starting on February 11, 2010 the class will meet on
Thursdays (usually consecutive) 4:30 - 7:00 for 11 sessions

Course Credit

TEACHERS will receive 30 CPDU’s and can apply for 2 hours of graduate credit from Governors State University for the additional cost that is currently being charged by the university.  More information will be provided at the first class.

PARAPROFESSIONALS
can obtain 2 hours of undergraduate credit from Prairie State Community College towards their certificates at an additional cost that is currently being charged by the college. Participants register for college credit at the first class meeting.

Members are responsible for the additional cost of taking the course for credit. 

The additional cost is the current price the university or college charges per credit hour for courses taken off-campus.

Registration

REGISTRATION is on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED basis.

Cost: $50 (non-refundable) includes materials (30 CPDUs)

For College Credit: Sign-up at first class for college credit

Teachers can earn two graduate credits from Governors State University. Cost is the current price that the University charges per credit hour for off-campus courses.

Paraprofessionals can earn two undergraduate hours from Prairie State Community College. Cost Cost is the current price that the College charges per credit hour for off-campus courses.

Participants must attend all classes, read and participate in class discussions and activities.

Union Leadership Institute (ULI)

The Illinois Federation of Teachers provides classes that train union leaders--new and experienced in

  • how to be a union leader

  • bargain a contract-beginner and advanced

  • grievance administration

  • financial analysis for pre K-12 districts (one weekend in February)

All courses except the Financial analysis require a three weekend commitment. 

These classes are reimbursed by Local 943 according to established guidelines.

 

The ULI also offers classes in professional issues.  This year three weekends are dedicated to special education issues.  Each weekend covers one topic and provides the attendee with 9 CPDU's towards recertification.  Local 943 does not reimburse members for professional issues courses.
