Unless otherwise indicated, participants must attend all three weekend-sessions to complete these ULI sessions will run from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays and from 9 a.m. until noon on Sundays.
                                                 

                                                          BOOTCAMP FOR UNION LEADERS

Designed for newly-elected, prospective and veteran leaders who want to recharge their skills, this course will help participants develop and enhance their leadership skills to ensure the success of their locals/councils in today’s challenging education, economic and political climate. Participants will:

  • Build skills and clarify roles of local officers and activists.

  • Compile a leadership toolbox of valuable skills and resources.

  • Enhance the essential skills to empower and motivate others to be actively engaged in the union

  • Have fun in the leadership role!


​INTRODUCTION TO COLLECTIVE BARGAINING
 

This training provides those with little or no bargaining experience with an understanding of how and why negotiations work and prepares participants to actively engage in the bargaining process. Participants will:

  • Review collective bargaining laws.

  • Learn the different stages in a negotiation

  • Prepare and write negotiation proposals.

  • Learn what makes the negotiation team work well together.

  • Learn how the mediation process works.

IFT’s Communication Department will offer the following two-part course as part of its Ambassador Program:

                                STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR UNION LEADERS
                               (Meets for two weekend-long sessions: Sep 30-Oct 1, and Dec 2-3, 2023)

Newsletters or social media? Email or printed mailers? Which is the best method to reach our members? How do we share our local’s concerns with our community? What’s the best way to interact with the media about our issues? You’ve got questions, and we can help you find the answers! Created for local leaders, building stewards, organizers and other union activists who are responsible for getting important information to their members and the communities they serve, this course will give you the tools and strategies to get your message to your intended audience. During this course, participants learn to:

  • Develop your local’s communication strategy to ensure maximum effectiveness.

  • Tailor your message based on the audience.

  • Identify and coach spokespeople and community allies who can amplify your message to the media.

  • Engage your members with interactive digital messaging and on-line campaigns.
