Union Leadership Institute

November 5-6, 2022 . February 4-5, 2022 . April 22-23, 2023

IFT’s Union Leadership Institute (ULI) program has been designed to meet the needs of both new and experienced local leaders and activists in all IFT constituency groups. ULI provides participants with hands-on learning of union skills, professional development opportunities and a chance to network with other IFT members from throughout the state. We have adapted our training to meet the changing needs of union leadership as we grapple with pandemic recovery and racial injustice.

Unless otherwise indicated, participants must attend all three weekend-sessions to complete these courses.

ULI sessions will run from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays and from 9 a.m. until noon on Sundays.

Participants can select and complete one of the ULI core courses over three weekend-long sessions. The core courses for the upcoming year are:

  • Boot Camp for Union Leaders

  • Building and Sustaining Union Power (must enroll in teams of 2 or more)

  • Effective Grievance Administration

  • Introduction to Collective Bargaining

 

Boot Camp for Union Leaders                                

Designed for newly-elected, prospective and veteran leaders who want to recharge their skills, this course will help participants develop and enhance their leadership skills to ensure the success of their locals/councils in today’s challenging education, economic and political climate. Participants will:

  • skills and clarify roles of local officers and activists.

  • a leadership toolbox of valuable skills and resources.

  • the essential skills to empower and motivate others to be actively engaged in the union;

  • fun in the leadership role!

Building and Sustaining Union Power                                

Enrollment restricted to local/council teams of 2 or more

Successful member-driven issues campaigns can have positive impact on our members’ lives. Teams that participants in this training will acquire the tools needed to plan and implement their local’s issues-based contract, policy, or community campaign. Training will focus on:

  • the best practices to develop an issues-based campaign.

  • collaboratively with the community to advance the union’s/council’s issue.

  • the union/council message.

  • internally and recruiting volunteers; and

  • various opportunities to engage in political and legislative systems.

 Effective Grievance Administration                                

This interactive course will help participants master the grievance process with group practice and simulated role play. This course will help participants develop critical skills designed to:

  • gripes from grievances.

  • grievance investigation and research skills.

  • problem-solving approaches to settlement.

  • prepare, and present grievances.

 Introduction to Collective Bargaining                                

This training provides those with little or no bargaining experience with an understanding of how and why negotiations work and prepares participants to actively engage in the bargaining process. Participants will:

  • collective bargaining laws.

  • the different stages in a negotiation.

  • and write negotiation proposals.

  • what makes the negotiation team work well together; and,

  • how the mediation process works
