Back to School Legislative Meet & Greet Picnic 2026
A little rain did not ruin the parade of legislators at the Local 943 Legislators Picnic this year! Legislators representing the area took time from their busy schedules to spend the afternoon with Local 943 members and their families. We were proud to welcome U.S. Representative Sean Casten from the 6th district, Illinois Representative Mary Gill from the 35th district, Illinois Representative Rick Ryan from the 36th district, and Illinois Senate candidate Fran Hurley for the 18th district. Then, just as we thought the parade was slowing down, Illinois Senator Mike Hastings from the 19th district and Moraine Valley Trustee Beth Kirkwood arrived to round out our lineup of speakers. Each spoke highly of educators and the importance of education and thanked the union for our support. As an added bonus 943 had the privilege of hosting three IFT executive board members: President Stacy Davis Gates, Executive VP Cyndi Oberle Dahm, and Membership Secretary John Miller. We thank them for their unwavering support of our picnic and our Local.
But what is a picnic without fun, games, and food? Members with children had plenty to do at our picnic too! Face painting by Amy Lee, balloon art by Donna Mackey, games, sidewalk chalk and bubbles rounded out the family fun. And who doesn't love the creative array of baskets our councils donate for the COPE raffle? This year's selections included wine, beer, assorted Dolly Parton cake mixes, various gift cards, and a handmade blanket. The Los Friends Restaurant Taco truck served a delicious lunch of tacos, rice, beans, and churros, and was enjoyed by all. A special thank you goes out to the Bernal and O'Dea families for all their help making the picnic a success.
